Ductless Split System HVAC

Ductless Split System HVAC

What is a ductless split system?

Split systems are called such because the compressor and cooling units are split. The compressor sits outside your home. Small refrigerant and electrical lines run from the compressor, through your walls, to cooling units mounted on ceilings and walls throughout your home. Although there are some installation requirements, running wall cables is a lot quicker and less costly than installing ductwork throughout your home. Just one of these outdoor compressors can power up to four internal cooling units, making them perfect for small, older homes. Ductless split system units can be used in rooms without windows or exterior walls and are perfect for zone-cooling or retrofits. Each indoor zone can be controlled separately for optimum performance. Split systems are more efficient than bulky, duct systems when it comes to small homes and most split systems can heat and cool your home.

How do you size a ductless split system?

In order to maintain the efficiency benefit of a ductless split system, you need to ensure your system is correctly sized for your home. Size is not based solely on the system, but also insulation, number of indoor units and their placement. Bailey Brothers technicians are experts in HVAC measurement and calibration and can size your unit correctly the first time. The sizing guide is state below in British Thermal Units (BTUs).

  • 350 sq ft: 9,000 BTUs
